Your gateway to affordable travel
With flight times of roughly 1h50–2h05, Prague is a favourite for long weekends and short European breaks. Direct services run from multiple London airports, typically with easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways and Wizz Air. For the best prices, compare departures from LHR, LGW, STN and LTN in a single search and stay flexible by a day or two on either side of your ideal dates.
Price patterns: fares rise for summer holidays and the December market season. Aim for shoulder months (April–June, September–October), book 4–8 weeks ahead for standard weekends, and look at midweek departures (Tue–Wed) plus early morning flights for consistent value. Cabin-only travel helps dodge the biggest add-ons.
Old Town (Staré Město) is ideal for first-timers: the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge and cafe-lined squares are on your doorstep. For postcard castle views and quiet evenings, choose Mala Strana (Lesser Town). If you prefer local cafes, leafy parks and good value, Vinohrady and Letná deliver relaxed neighbourhood vibes within a few tram stops of the centre. Night owls and budget travellers often base in Žižkov thanks to lively bars and wallet-friendly stays.
Václav Havel Airport sits ~17 km from the centre. The Airport Express (AE) bus links PRG with Praha hlavní nádraží (main station) in ~35 minutes, handy for onward metro connections. Public buses 119 (to Nádraží Veleslavín, Metro A) and 100 (to Zličín, Metro B) are cheaper alternatives. Taxis and rideshares are widely available; confirm the meter and approximate fare before departing.
Prague leans hearty: beef svíčková with creamy sauce, pork knuckle, potato pancakes and warming goulash. For sweets, try chimney-rolled trdelník or fruit dumplings. Beer culture is serious here; sample crisp lagers and unfiltered brews in classic beer halls. Vegetarian and modern bistro options have grown fast, especially around Vinohrady and Karlín.
The metro, tram and bus network is extensive, inexpensive and punctual. Pick up a 24-hour pass if you’ll be criss-crossing neighborhoods; otherwise single tickets plus a few scenic tram rides (try the #22) work well. The centre is compact and walkable — pack comfy shoes for cobbles and mild hills.
